Meet Your Doula

My name is Aja!

I'm a passionate and dedicated doula, trained through Birth in Color RVA, committed to providing unwavering support to expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. My journey in birth support began with a deep-rooted love for babies and a genuine desire to make a positive impact during the transformative experience of childbirth. Having attended numerous births, I have honed my skills in providing emotional, physical, and informational support to mothers and their families.

My goal was initially to become a neonatal specialized pediatrician, driven by a fascination with the intricacies of newborn care. However, my experiences as a doula have illuminated the profound impact that compassionate, continuous support can have on the birthing process and the overall well-being of the family.

I find immense joy in engaging with midwives and attending prenatal appointments, collaborating seamlessly to ensure that mothers receive comprehensive care and feel empowered to make informed decisions about their birthing experience. My commitment extends beyond the delivery room, as I am dedicated to supporting mothers during the postpartum period, offering assistance, guidance, and a compassionate presence as they navigate the joys and challenges of new parenthood.

Always willing to lend a helping hand, I approach each birth with a unique blend of empathy, respect, and a deep understanding of the individual needs of the birthing person and their family. My mission is to create a supportive and nurturing environment, fostering a positive and memorable birthing experience for all involved.

In addition to my professional expertise, I bring a genuine love for babies and a heartfelt passion for the miracle of childbirth. It is my privilege to be a part of this sacred journey, and I look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of expectant mothers and their families.

When and why should I hire a doula?

How much do you charge for doula services?

It's ideal to hire a doula as early in your pregnancy as possible. This allows for a strong foundation of trust and understanding to be built between us, ensuring comprehensive support throughout your entire journey. A doula provides personalized support, advocates for your birth preferences, and enhances your overall experience. Research shows that having a doula can lead to shorter labors, reduced need for interventions, and improved satisfaction with the birth process.

Clients with Medicaid will have their services covered by their insurance.

Clients without Medicaid will have the option of choosing a package that fits their needs the best.

Can I have a doula if I'm being induced, having a caesarean birth, or planning to use medications for pain?

Absolutely! Having a doula can be beneficial in various birthing scenarios, including inductions, cesarean births, and when using medications for pain relief. Here's how a doula can support you in each situation:

  1. Induced Labor:

    • A doula can provide emotional support during the induction process, helping you understand the procedures involved and offering comfort.

    • Continuous support during labor, even if it's induced, has been shown to improve outcomes and reduce the need for certain interventions.

  2. Cesarean Birth:

    • Doulas can offer emotional support, help you understand the cesarean process, and be a calming presence in the operating room.

    • While a doula cannot replace medical professionals during surgery, they can provide support before and after the procedure, including assisting with initial bonding and breastfeeding.

  3. Medications for Pain Relief:

    • Doulas are experienced in various pain relief techniques, including comfort measures and positioning, which can complement the effects of medications.

    • A doula can help you explore and understand your pain relief options, supporting your choices and ensuring you have a positive birthing experience.

Can I have a doula if I'm being induced, having a caesarean birth, or planning to use medications for pain?

Regardless of the birth plan, a doula's role is to support your choices, provide information, and be a continuous, non-judgmental presence. It's essential to communicate your preferences and concerns with your doula so they can tailor their support to meet your specific needs. Whether your birth experience unfolds naturally or involves medical interventions, a doula is there to empower and assist you throughout the entire journey.

"Aja has been a tremendous help for me throughout my pregnancy and postpartum journey. She attended the majority of my prenatal and postnatal appointments, and it was very helpful to have her as a support system and advocate. My birthing experience turned out to be a little chaotic, but she was able to remain calm and provide peaceful support to me during such a crazy experience. I highly recommend her!"
